Brait is an abbreviation of Branding and IT. A friend and I, while still in campus came up with the name in the slums of Mathare. He was a marketing student and had a great passion of branding. I was pursuing software engineering and so we thought, “Why not build something that will make our future bright? Something that will help us escape the smelly dungeons of Mathare?”
I was struggling with severe seizures then and the friend would nurse my sickly self. He spent more times in hospital than every friend or family and was always there to remind me that one day, our future will be bright!
Life wasn’t so easy for us as the unemployment rate in Kenya was so high. We found ourselves going our separate ways grappling for any job that would make ends meet. I struggled to run Brait as a side hustle, constantly reminiscing my friend’s words as he sat by my hospital bed assuring me that one day our future will be Brait.
I have been many things in life; I have been a deejay, a farmer, a graphic designer, a political blogger, a web developer, I sold photo frames and mounts, a digital marketer and many other things a poor desperate Kenyan does. I have been a failure in 99% of them but I never quit. This has not only made me resilient but has given me purpose – I wouldn’t never want anybody else to fail the way I failed.

I have always wanted to be a teacher back in primary school in a humble village in Rombo, Oloitokitok, Kenya. Teachers were the most notable and respected persons in my village. My mother was a teacher and her spirit would melt with sadness every time I said I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up.
To change my mentality, she used all she had to buy me a computer as a young kid. This changed the course of my life and the young boy with the ‘village teacher’ mindset started operating his own cyber cafe after high school and went on to study software engineering in campus.
As the successful path to employment is blurred in most third world countries like Kenya, I was jobless for years and I went on to teach myself graphic design, web development, and photography. Being a writer, I run and monetized blogs in the genres of poetry, creative writing, politics and spirituality but nothing came through.
To make ends meet, I tried my hands on several other businesses like; selling T-shirts, photo frames & mounts and even farming. In all these, I failed miserably. I suffered from depression and anxiety and for the longest, I have had crazy seizures that have wiped off most of my memory.
Instead of quitting, I rolled up all my misfortunes and used them as a big catapult to project me into higher and better versions of self. Today, I help entrepreneurs who want to make meaningful income from their brands. I always say, “I have been a failure for the better part of my life, lucky for you, you do not have to because you just met me!”
